This is the December 28 assignment from the Holidays in Hand class I took from Jessica Sprague.
Peace and rest at length have come
All the day's long toil is past,
And each heart is whispering, "Home,
Home at last."
~Thomas Hood
Write about the significance of "home" at holiday time. You know the song: "there's no place like home for the holidays, no matter how far you may roam...for the holidays you can't beat home, sweet home" (I know some of you are hearing Perry Como singing it - I, however, have Karen Carpenter's version running through my head). We have never travelled for the holidays; though there have been years when I wished we had. "Home" for me means "family" - and for a few years, mine wasn't together on Christmas. My parents lived in New Hampshire for a couple of years (they were here one year during that time, though) - and in Arizona for a few years. Christmas without my mom, dad, sister and her family, and brother just wasn't really Christmas. I think that's why I threw myself into making stuff several years when they weren't here for Christmas. Thankfully, though, we're all here in Central Arkansas now -- and all spend Christmas morning together.
Photograph some of your favorite places in your home. I wish I could say I have a "favorite" place in my home, but I don't. My house is upside down thanks to everything being rearranged for Christmas and having six people living here (four of them little people). Everything won't be back to "normal" until after the first of the year since we're having the carpets cleaned New Year's weekend.
Our "do" again today is to play games - Go Fish, maybe SkipBo, and - of course - Wii. By the way, if you have Wii game suggestions, I'm all ears. We're not making anything because Mommy is busy undecorating the tree!
Recall some of the homes you've spent holidays in. Do these places have special meaning to you? Of course, this home - the one we live in now - we spent holidays here before it was our home because it was my sister's home. She brought all her babies home from the hospital to this home. I've brought all my babies home from the hospital to this home. This house holds many, many wonderful family memories for us.
