December Daily - December 10

This is the December 10 assignment from the Holidays in Hand class I took from Jessica Sprague.

It comes every year and will go on forever.  And along with Christmas belong the keepsakes and the customs. Those humble, everyday things a mother clings to, and ponders, like Mary in the secret spaces of her heart.   ~ Marjorie Holmes

Write about your favorite holiday sights.   I love seeing people decorate the outside of their homes for the holidays - lights, inflatables, light-up nativity scenes.  Some do it tastefully, some are what I think of as gauche.  But I've found this year, especially, that the more lights and "things" they have in their yard or on their house, the more beautiful my children think it is.  I will often hear from the backseat, "Oh, that house is beautiful!"  When, in my opinion, it really needs a little restraint and a little more of a "theme."  However, I find my high horse getting knocked down this year when I hear those sweet little voices from the back of the van.   Driving around neighborhoods and looking at lights is one of our favorite holiday activities - we've done it every year since 2003, Elizabeth's first Christmas.  I look forward to our night out this year!

Photograph something that delights your eyes...proving that we'll do anything for our children...
This is Elizabeth's inflatable snow globe.  My mom snagged it for 90% off at Home Depot on Elizabeth's birthday (Jan 3).  E loves it - all the kids do, actually.  And Brad and I even think he's kind of cute.

We don't have a "do" or "make" today because it's yet another "no daddy" day at our house.  He will be home tomorrow and we can't wait!!!

Remember specific holiday sights from childhood - do you try to recreate any of these now?  My specific holiday sight isn't from childhood, but from my early adult years.  We used to go to my aunt's house on Christmas Eve to have dinner and exchange gifts with my biological father's side of the family.  In her neighborhood was a house that was outlined with clear and transparent red (not the painted red) C9 lights (the "big" outdoor lights).  I told Brad then that I wanted to decorate our house like that once we were married and had a place of our own.  We moved into this house in October 2000 and I've had clear and red lights on our house since that first Christmas.  I love the simple look, I love the big lights, and I love just the little bit of color that the red adds.  It's fun and reminds me of peppermint candies.
