Another new LO

Going back in time still. This photo is from the same day as the last LO - 2/14/04. Brad and Elizabeth we walking to the Bridges' house.

Kit is Amanda Rockwell's Garden Sunset available at SweetShoppe Designs. Font is Pea Jenny Script. I also used Atomic Cupcake's inked edge and wild tear actions. This is a scraplift of aidaville's LO that was the Challenge #12 winner on Autumn Leaves' Freestyle blog (link to their blog in my sidebar)

Traveling back in time

Amanda Rockwell's newest kits have been burning a hole in my PC since I got them. The last few pages I've done have been recent history and so I decided I needed to go back to 2004 and start scrapping those photos again. I chose this photo of Amy & Carson, Elizabeth & I in the snow, February 14, 2004. I remember that day so well. I called Amy and said, "Meet us outside in 15 minutes, we'll bring the camera!" We had the best time with the kids out in the snow. Four parents, three cameras...it was hilarious! I was 22 weeks pregnant with Katherine at the time, so in a t-shirt and fleece, I was toasty warm!

This layout was inspired by a layout Maria did of the oh-so-cute Piper. Mine is a little different, but definitely inspired by Maria's.

I used Amanda Rockwell's Floral Splendor kit from SweetShoppe Designs -- love the teals and oranges; not typical colors for me and so I really, really like it. The font I used for the date is Pea Jenny Script (not a big surprise, it's my favorite). I also used OptikVerve Lab's Virtual Photographer filter on the photo and Atomic Cupcake's Tear action on the circles.

First NYC scrapbook page

This is a photo from Friday afternoon when I met up with Mark, Robin and Auguste in the bar at the Marriott Marquis. :)

Journaling reads:
Our iVillage meetings were over on Friday right at 11:30, after lunch, I ran to American Girl Place to buy my t-shirt (and got lost in the process of coming back to the hotel). Mark, Robin and Auguste were already there waiting on me. We went to the hotel bar to grab a drink and gab. I immediately felt at ease with all three of them which makes sense since I’ve known them all forever! Well, I’ve known Mark and Auguste for about 10 years and it seems like I’ve known Robin for that long! The waitress took our photo while I was on the phone with Mark’s partner, Jeff, trying to broker a deal for him to landscape my yard. He wasn’t going for it, though. It was so good to get to visit with them all!! And my next trip to NYC, I definitely plan on staying longer so I can visit longer!!

Papers: Robin Cabana (Flair, Naturally Shabby and Sunrise extra)
Inked edge: Atomic Cupcake action
Stitched Frame: Stitched Doodles by Tracy Blankenship (Digital Freebies and ScrappinDigiKreations)
Font: Times New Roman (NYC) Pea Jenny Script (journaling)

I've been tagged

1. Have you ever been searched by the cops?
Yes. I turned around in a drug area and the cop thought I'd stopped to buy drugs. I was on my way to a Sunday School pool party and got lost...hello!

2. Do you close your eyes on a roller coaster?
It's been so long since I've been on a roller coaster! I don't think I do.

3. When's the last time you've been sledding?
Never - it doesn't snow enough here

4. Would you rather sleep with someone else, or alone?
Depends on who and where. At home, I hate to sleep alone. Away from home with Brad, I hate to sleep alone. Away from home without Brad, I'd BETTER be alone.

5. Do you believe in ghosts?
Eh, I'm not that sure - but who knows.

6. Do you consider yourself creative?
Yes

7. Do you think O.J. killed his wife?
Yes

8. Jennifer Aniston or Angelina Jolie? (silly, I know ... but very "now")
Jennifer, if I have to care.

9. Can you honestly say you know ANYTHING about politics?
Absolutely!

10. Do you know how to play poker?
Very basic rules though I still don't know what beats what other than nothing beats a Royal Flush (I think?)

11. Have you ever been awake for 48 hours straight?
Yes, the day Elizabeth was born and the day after - I was too wired to go to sleep!

12. What's your favorite commercial?
The Johnson's Baby Wash commercial that says "Who would've ever thought the love of your life would be short, chubby and bald?" and cuts to a mom bathing her baby in the sink. Totally fverklempt on that one!

13. Who was your first love?
Don't want to talk about him but he's history and that's a good thing

14. If you're driving in the middle of the night, and no one is around you, do you run a red light?
Not usually; but I have before

15. Do you have a secret that no one knows but you?
Yes and I plan on keeping it that way.

16. Boston Red Sox or New York Yankees?
Chicago Cubs -- so, neither

17. Have you ever been Ice Skating?
Yes about 30 years ago

18. How often do you remember your dreams?
Frequently. I often wake in the middle of a dream.

Yes.

21. What talent do you wish you had?
I wish I could draw

Never had it.

23. What do you wear to bed?
Either a cotton gown or a t-shirt and sometimes nothing though that's rare since I became a parent.

24. Do you truly hate anyone?
No, why waste the energy?

25. If you could sleep with one famous person, who would it be?
I'm not sure I would. Good grief, why train someone when I have a husband who knows exactly what to do based solely on the way I breathe??

26. Do you know anyone in jail?
Yes, capitol felony murder, and he held my oldest child! ACK!

27. What food do you find disgusting?
Just about anything they make on the Japanese version of Iron Chef

28. Have you ever made fun of your friends behind their back?
No. What goes around comes around. Now I have given friends grief to their face about things.

29. Have you ever been punched in the face?
No.

30. Do you believe in angels and demons?
Yes

Who to tag? Hmmm…
Traci Reed because she needs to love her blog more
TracyB because she doesn't have enough going on in her life
Amanda ditto both reasons

(Just ignore this if you don't like being tagged! LOL)

My Impressions of Ground Zero

IX XI is 9/11 in Roman numerals. I'd never realized that before I saw it on the background of the memorial.

Rebecca worked in midtown when it happened and this was her first visit to Ground Zero, I am truly honored that she chose to share it with me. We took the subway in from NJ and as a result, rode right into the Pit. We saw more from the train and on the platform than we did on street level. It was really weird to be where I'd had dinner almost 25 years ago (at Windows on the World) and there was nothing there. I don't remember a lot about dinner that night in 1982 but I remember The Buildings - the Twin Towers were a big deal.

To know that thousands upon thousands of people lost their lives at the site was very solemn, very sobering. As we read the timeline, Rebecca shared a little. She is one of the very few people who only knows survivors - people who made it out or by their circumstances didn't make it into the buildings at all. She said it was very strange to pull into the train station and see cars that no one ever came for. She told a story of woman who lost her husband; the widow sold her house and the family that bought it doesn't really "fit" into the neighborhood because everyone knows who used to live there. That house will have to flip again before the neighborhood will be able to accept the family that lives there - but then I wonder, will everyone in the neighborhood ever really accept the family that lives in that house? I remembered being on the phone with Mark as he was trying to get back to Evan's school to pick him up and then I suddenly realized, what if my talking to Mark kept someone from being able to say goodbye to their family? I hope not.

As we walked along reading the timeline and memorial, we saw couples hand their camera to someone and they posed in front of the fence, arms around one another, smiling. How in the world could someone see Ground Zero as a tourist attraction in the cheesey connotation of that phrase. A tourist destination, yes (after all, I was a tourist and I wanted to be there) but it certainly isn't something like the Statue of Liberty or Rockefeller Center or the Empire State building where you smile for the camera. I didn't feel comfortable taking pictures at all - all I could think was "people DIED here" and so my camera stayed in the bag. Many people were taking photos of the site and the memorial, and I don't have a problem with that - but acting as if this were just any other sight-to-see in the city? Highly inappropriate, in my opinion.

And then there were the "vendors" - I use that term loosely - men selling little postcard-size books of photos. What?! People DIED here, folks. Please don't let these men profit from that! But, I saw people buy them. There is a sign hanging on the 'fence' that specifically asks people not to buy from vendors but rather to keep the ground sacred. A man stood directly below it, selling things. All you can do is shake your head.

Then we went to St. Paul's Chapel. It is directly across the street from the World Trade Center and was not damaged at all on 9/11. They have an exhibit set up in the church showing how it was used as a relief center for the rescue workers. As we walked into the church, we went to the left and walked along that side many of the things I saw and read were very moving - but as we finished that part of the exhibit, we were "herded" through a gift shop section before we could continue down the other side of the church to see the rest of the exhibit. Now, I realize they need to pay for the upkeep of the chapel and the utilities to have millions of people walking through there; however, add a few more collection boxes - but please don't try to sell me a book or a cross. I don't need a souvenir! And if you feel like you need to sell something, then set up a bookstore offsite, please. Don't sell to me in the church. I immediately thought of Jesus running the money changers out of the temple (Matthew 21:12-13, among other passages -- go to BibleGateway.com and search on "money changers"). Maybe a different context, but still - we're there to see the sacred, don't make a mockery of that by trying to make a buck. I was so disturbed by that, I couldn't even concentrate on the other half of the exhibit. It really, really bothered me.

And so, there are my impressions - the sacred and, some would say 'capitalist' I say 'opportunist' in a very weird juxtaposition that is wrong on so many levels. But beyond that, a truly surreal site in the landscape of Manhattan; a wound that is trying to heal.

Paranoia?

Grab your cheese, whine ahead.

After spending some time with them I can't figure out if it is paranoia or if the exclusion I felt was real. I was hoping it was the way I was reading things prior to actually being there, but I don't think it was. I think it's real. When someone sits in the chair next to yours while you're away getting coffee and then moves once you get back from getting coffee - that's pretty much not your imagination.

Start spreading the news

I'm leaving tomorrow for New York City and am looking forward to it. I've received the agenda and it looks like the meetings are going to be very interesting.

What is with Rescue Me? Janet and Tommy - very weird.

Baby book notes: Annie is now pulling up -- yes, to her feet. Yes, she's only 6.5 months old. Yes, I want her to be my baby longer, but darn if she isn't the cutest thing standing there in her crib. And she's so proud of herself! She's crawling all over the house and will actually "look" for her sisters if they leave the family room.

Katherine has turned into this little Southern belle. Many of her words have extra syllables added. "Mommy, what's thay-uht" (that) "My not want to take a nay-yup" (nap) . I don't know where she picked it up, but it's the funniest thing ever.

As I was packing my suitcase this afternoon, Elizabeth saw my PJs. "Mommy, why are you taking PJs to New York?"
"So I'll have something to sleep in." A panicked look enters her eyes and it dawns on her, I'm going away.
She tears up, "But, Mommy, I don't want you to go. I want you to stay here with me."
"Sweetie, Mommy has to go to New York for a few days. You will have Daddy and Boop and Bippie and NinNin and Annie. Daddy will need your help with Annie. And Mommy plans to come home on Sunday. Mommy always plans to come home." Yes, I want to say "Mommy always comes home" -- but what if, God forbid, something happens and I don't come home? I want her to know that it is always my plan to come back to her. It is always my plan.
