December Daily - December 2

This is the December 2 assignment from the Holidays in Hand class I took from Jessica Sprague.

There is no ideal Christmas; only the one Christmas you decide to make as a reflection of your values, desires, affections and traditions. ~ Bill McKibben

Write: "Read the article Welcome Home...for the Holidays and write your thoughts"

This article spoke so much to the subject of contentment without ever using that specific word. And the final line really hit me...
A welcoming holiday home. To have one, we must refurnish our heart, not our house!

Oh, wow. We absolutely must refurnish our hearts and not our houses in order to have a truly welcoming holiday home. I love how she talked about what it takes to show hospitality...because many of those things are things that cause me to make excuses..."my house is too small, my furniture isn't perfect [hello, I have four little bitty kids!]..." I can always come up with a list. I need to step out of my comfort zone and be hospitable, be welcoming. I'm supposed to be hospitable. I'm supposed to want to be hospitable. And I need to do that.

I loved this from the article, too:
Yes, there are small children living here, and yes, you can find toys and clothes and Corduroy the bear lounging about in odd places. This is a house where life is, and never more happily than during the holidays.

Yep, she's been in my house recently. The article has made me realize I can - and need to - be more hospitable all the time, but especially during the holidays.

Our photography assignment for today is "something warm" - and because my friends joke about how much I iron and since I just got a brand new iron - I took a picture of my iron. Mine is always warm!

Our "do" today is draw snowmen. I'm having the girls draw snowmen that I will scan and put on the family Christmas letter that goes out with our Christmas photo cards (already ordered at Sam's Club and ready to pick up).

Our "make" today is Christmas cards. I am helping Elizabeth make Christmas cards for her friends. I finally got some decent adhesive so we can finish that up. She's so excited about them!

The "remember" prompt today is Do you remember making any specific recipe with older family members? What was the experience like? I remember decorating Christmas cut-out cookies that my mom had made. I loved those! And I remember watching my step-grandmother as she decorated a cake to look like Santa, using coconut for his beard (assuring that *I* wouldn't eat it!! blech). Beyond that, I never was in the kitchen during the holidays - something I hope to remedy with my own children.
