Apparently the DSL issue was with my wireless router (a Linksys WRT54GS if that helps). DSL modem ethernet cable plugged into wireless router Internet port - the "internet" light was solid green which indicated the internet was there -- however, neither computer could get to the internet. The desktop was plugged into the router, the laptop was connecting to the router wirelessly. Bypass the router and whammo - computers can get to the internet.
I went to the Linksys website and went through all the steps to reset the router and connect to the internet but it wouldn't work at all. Nothing worked. So, do I throw in the towel and buy a new router?

I asked Jay because he likes this stuff (really), and we have the same brand of modem. He started rambling, so I'm giving him the keyboard:
It may not be sufficient to merely reset the router to factory settings (i.e. some network configuration may be required). While not hyper-complex, we would need in-person access to the equipment to see if this is the problem. You can try googling for instructions on how to configure the WRT54GS with your particular DSL modem. It is not uncommon for DSL modems to come preprogrammed with settings that conflict with the factory settings for some popular routers.
Additionally, there might be a cabling problem. Your DSL modem is connected to the router with a CAT5 cable. The router is then connected to the computers with additional cables. When you plugged directly into the DSL modem, you used only one cable. Perhaps a problem developed in one of the cables and you just happened to select a good one when connecting directly to the modem.
Good luck
Whew, good luck from me, too - Colleen :)
Hey - My techie hubby always says "Unplug the computers, unplug the modem. Let it sit for 5 minutes then plug in the computers and plug in the modem. That usually works for us.
I'd ask Bob but he's so fried from a big trip and the coming home to computer issues at church (network stuff too) that I think his head would explode if I asked. LOL Maybe tomorrow.....
