First, I took kraft paper (the “postal” wrapping paper from the office supply aisle) and traced my design twice using a template. By the way, Rachael Ray’s Chicken Stock makes a great weight when your paper is trying to curl.

Then, I squirted a blob of paint in it and started spreading. One of the things I learned from reading about this is that you need to paint at least a half-inch outside the lines of the template so that when you cut them, the edges won’t curl. The big wide sponge brushes are great for this.

This is Katherine’s choice of color for her tulip…tangerine. It surprised me because I thought she’d go for lavender. I like it, though!

After the base color dried, I painted dots on the tulips and one of the eggs. The other egg has stripes on it. I used white for the dots and stripes. After all the paint was dry, I sprayed on two coats of lacquer (of course, drying time between coats). Then I cut out the tulips and eggs, hot glued them (leaving a space for stuffing), stuffed them, hot glued the opening and then stapled all around for reinforcement. One note about stuffing – I used plastic grocery bags because it doesn’t get soggy in the rain like batting would. Also I found that cutting the bags made for a much nicer “stuff”, especially in the points of the tulips.
Final result:

(check out the bald spot where Harrison cut his own hair!!!…and we have a wedding to attend in a month, lovely – I’ll get it fixed before the wedding, especially since we’re having family pictures taken that day!)

(minus the lovely little models). Elizabeth chose the pink (Parisian Pink – Folk Art brand), Katherine chose the tangerine as seen above. Annie’s egg is Soft Apple and Harrison’s egg is simply Light Blue (both also Folk Art brand – all purchased at Michael’s on sale).
As I glued these to the ribbon, I thought a bouquet of tulips would be *adorable* – you could use a wide green ribbon to create the stems – CUTE! Anyway, there you have it. And I’m sure I’ll do more for other seasons and holidays. Seriously easy, fun, cute and a pop of color against the black door. What more could a girl ask for?
