We had to do a little scrambling to find a place because my parents (who were going to host the party) sold their house ONE WEEK after putting it on the market. I decided to email Robyn and check on The Little Gym. Robyn and her husband own TLG in Little Rock and in the Dallas area (where they now live). She put me in touch with her manager here in LR and we ended up scheduling Nin's birthday party for the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. I was worried none of her preschool classmates would come - but a few did and it ended up being a wonderful little party. Even the moms got into it! I have pictures to prove it but I'll spare you those.
You may remember that Nin wanted a sunshine birthday theme with a sunshine cake. She wanted a ba-ni-ya (vanilla) birthday cake with yellow sparkly sprinkles on it. I thought that would be easy enough for me to do - sparing me the expense of ordering a cake from the bakery and the time required to go order it and then pick it up on party day. I got busy making and decorating the day before the party. While I was decorating the cake, Harrison got fussy and no one but Mommy would do. Brad said, "I'll trade you. I'll finish decorating the cake, you feed him." He took the pasty bag and finished decorating the top of the cake - only about a quarter of the top of the cake was left to be done - and he did a great job, don't you think? Here's a picture of Nin's cake:

If I ever do something like this again, I'll make my own fondant (because the package stuff tastes so nasty) and I'll make the sun's rays larger/longer and a little bit funkier - more like something that was on the invitation. It was a lot of fun to do and I think I'm going to try to make Harrison's birthday cake myself, too.
Nin loved her cake. And she really loved that her daddy helped decorate it. She got a big kick out of that. All the party attendees loved it, too. We did sun-themed goodie bags: sunflower seeds, Sun-Maid Raisins, little packets of sunscreen...and then, of course, the requisite bubbles and a wee bit of candy (none of that was "sun..." but Nin required that they be in the bag)
Oh, and she has already decided that next year, for her "5-year birthday" we're doing a Fancy Nancy theme. We are going to have a soirée and it will be very posh. If you've never read any of the Fancy Nancy books and you have a little girl - RUN to the library and check them out. They are absolutely adorable. Nin has gotten all three books as gifts and she loves them. Harrison does, too.
