What we did this morning

Egg Academy is officially underway. We had our first day of school today. I had to pry the handwriting book away from Elizabeth so we could do reading. Katherine was very interested in what E was doing in her handwriting book - so I'm going to buy the Kindergarten workbook for her to do (Elizabeth is working in Level A).

Reading - we've been working on reading for a week and...ugh...I hate it.  The kids hate it.  It's repetitive, monotonous and boring! If it doesn't get better, and soon, I'm going to ditch it for another curriculum.  We're using Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons and I've heard wonderful things about it - it has come highly recommended by quite a number of people whose opinions I trust.  What works for one kid/family might not work for another - and buddy, it ain't workin' for this one!  Though we're really close to being able to read the "I am Sam. Sam I am" part of Green Eggs and Ham.

We'll start math in a couple of weeks.  Elizabeth has already done FIVE handwriting lessons, so that means I can skip tomorrow and not feel badly about it.  We're going to the zoo with some friends from church since zoo admission is free for kids.

And here is a little collage of our morning...

Adorable! Looks like your crew had a blast. I say ditch the reading book. Reading should be a pleasure, not a chore. They may learn to read, but if you hate it that much they'll probably also learn to hate it too.

Wow, I can't believe E loves handwriting so much...my kids both hate it! I agree...ditch the reading book if she doesn't like it! You don't want her to start to dread reading.

That's just awesome, Gina! I agree with PP that ditching the reading program is a good idea. Reading should be fun!

Way to go Eggs! :-) I agree ditch it. Every kid and family is different. You will find what works.

Isn't amazing how much work they can get done in one day.
